Development of a pericardial device engineered to augment electrical systole in heart failure requires the consent, cooperation and services of a large animal EP lab committed to prove or disprove disclosed theory. Theory suggests electrically ischemic regions of myocardium unreachable by vascular intervention can be addressed and measured inexpensively in performance terms EF (Ejection Fraction) and CO (Cardiac Output) by an active externally applied electrical web deployed in the pericardial space.
Humble Agent - I appreciate your notation of closure of the disclosed IP. As a small entity, I regret that I do not have the legal and financial resources to futher prosecute ownership of the contested IP.
Because you continue to run the IP on the WWW, it appears that you endorse the novelty in a claim that represents an external pacemaker that selectively depolarizes the myocardium from the "outside in" rather than the contemporary "inside out" prior art of intravascularly deployed pacemakers.
I would be most interested to remain as an observer as claims relative to pacemaker intervention in heart failure develop.

Please see prior work. An external electrical grid/non-blood exposed pacemaker in the pericardial space is posited as a means of addressing diastolic heart failure. Chagasic heart failure is an expedient model of this entity. Crosstalk between Dr Daniel Iosa from Cordoba, Argentina and Drs. Peskin and McQueen at the Courant Institute is suggested
There are numerous systems that employ similar albiet not exact means of electrostimulation via a sack or mesh enclosure. Please refere to US Patent 6876887 and look at its forward citations. Also see claims 1, 6, and 7
Imagine one is hopelessy lost in the deepest desert and a grand camel (or perhaps rodeo bull) named Systole walks up. If you can leap upon his back, the first few steps will likely be very stressful. If control is attained, one might make it back again. I have (unsuccessfully) discussed this application with several corporate entities and still need help once the signal is delivered from the grid (myocardial IT). I welcome further authorship in this endeavor from other inventors interested in computational applications, electrodes and field management as well as minimimalization of engineering measures (such as scarring, ablation or suturing) that degrade diastole. Help from the Courant Institute or similar sponsor is solicited. Thanks, Leslie A. Beben

Filed:

27-Jan-2004

Abstract:

A pericardial augmentation apparatus and method for electrically assisting the normal contraction of the heart. The invention comprises placing a mesh material apparatus over the heart within the pericardial space. Embedded in the apparatus is a plurality of electrode nodules that are synchronized to stimulate and assist in the normal contraction of the heart. The mesh of the device is adaptable to fit any size or shape heart and can be self-secured or sutured to the pericardium.
